London: Printed for the Author, 1767. First edition, folio (570 x 380mm), [4], iv, [6], ii, [3]-11, [1], 12-16 [i.e. 17], [5]]pp., with list of subscribers, 74 [i.e. 55] full-page engraved plates (19 double-page, 2 slightly frayed and dust soiled at margins), uncut in orig. calf-backed boards, rather worn, calf and boards peeling, corners rubbed and worn, but overall a good sound copy with the plates clean and bright. First edition of a rare architectural work of houses designed by James Paine (1717-1789), the seventy-four plates illustrate sixteen of his most important completed projects, including the magnificent stables at Chatsworth, Sandbeck, and Axwell Park. "His architecture is basically Palladian in character, but he was by no means a slavish imitator of Kent and Burlington, and his work is distinguished by several characteristic features that give it a strong individuality." —Colvin, Biographical Dictionary of British Architects 1600-1840. This first part was published for subscribers only in 1767, a second part (not present here) didn't appear until 1783. Harris, 664; Fowler, 207; Millard Collection, English Books, 50.

Description:
Amsterdam: Michel Rey, 1780. Two [of five] volumes. Quartos, xvi, 264 & iv, 240. Each 'Tome' with an engraved vignette title and ninety-five engraved illustrations. Christian Hirschfeld (1742 - 1792), Enlightenment scholar and rationalist, is perhaps best known for this five volume work on gardens. Published in German as the 'Theorie der Gartenkunst' at the same time as this French edition, Hirschfeld attempted to delineate the garden with the scientific powers of his scholarship while still allowing a natural and essential sentimentality to remain. Feted as the man who introduced the 'English' garden to Scandinavia, this Kiel University professor devoted an enormous quantity of time and effort to this, his magnum opus. The work treats all aspects of the garden and is noteworthy for its descriptions of many of the finest European gardens of the day. Hirschfeld's scholarship did not cease here, however, for his chief aim was to depict the garden in its entirety, thus many of the illustrations are… Read More

Melbourne: Green Press, 1937. Signed Limited Edition. Edition limited to 100 numbered copies: Sir Ernest Scott's copy with signature on front endpaper. "Even today, when professional interest in undertaking work in Asia is stronger than ever, Hardy Wilson's up-front appreciation of the importance of Chinese architecture stands without parallel." Stanislaus Fung  & Mark Jackson, Architectural Theory Review  (Issue 1: Volume 1, 1996) Building upon an already established relationship with the National Library, Wilson's orginal drawings for the fifty plates in "Grecian and Chinese Architecture" joined their collection in 1935. "It was while contemplating the roofline of Purulia that Wilson made a discovery that would change the direction of his work. He became dissatisfied with the way the straight, Western line of the roof appeared to fall unchecked towards the ground, with nothing to ‘hold the eye' on its downward journey. Only Oriental, and particularly Chinese architecture avoided this… Read More

Casa del HerreroHouse of the Blacksmithstands today as one of the most fully developed and intact examples of Spanish Colonial Revival architecture. It was designed and built between 1922 and 1925 as a second house for George Fox Steedman, a St. Louis industrialist.
