About This Item

Rochester, NY: James Vick’s Sons, 1892-1893. Three issues. 4to. pp. [2], [32]-48, [2]; [2], [15]-32, [2]; [2], [33]-48, [2] pp. With over 100 woodcut-engraved text illustrations, illustrated ads, decorations. All issues preserved in original printed wrappers (some creasing, edgewear, some w/ minor closed tears, illustrated ads on back covers and front covers), still G set from the library of Mrs. F. Eicher, 2219 Andover St. First editions of this group of gardening monthlies issued by one of Rochester, NY’s leading 19th-century nurserymen recognized that the city’s proximity to the Erie Canal prolonged the growing season, and shortened the cost and time of freight delivery. By the 1880s, James Vick’s sons employed over 100 people to handle the 300 orders, and 3000 letters received daily.
