Paris.. Ca. 1801- 1819.. Stipple engraving printed in color with added hand color, plate 9 x 12 inches on sheet 10 x 16 inches. Faint light foxing. Very good condition. A gorgeous print highlighting the artistry of Pierre Joseph Redoute in combination with the subtle technique of stipple engraving. The celebrated botanical artist Redoute (1759-1840) had the distinction of receiving the patronage of Marie Antoinette before the French Revolution as well as that of the Empress Josephine following the Reign of Terror. This fine example of botanical art was published in "Traite des Arbres et Arbustes que l'on cultive en france en pleine terre. Seconde edition 'nouveau Duhamel' considerablement augmentee" (Dunthorne 243) which documented trees and shrubs cultivated in France. This is plate 1 from Volume 2. .
