Plebs: Organ of the National Council of Labour Colleges. Thirteen war-date issues

by MILLAR, J.P.M. [James] (ed)

Condition: See description

London: National Council of Labour Colleges, 1940. First Edition. Paperback. The National Council of Labour Colleges, founded in 1921, was the coordinating body of the British Socialist self-education movement. Though many of the journal's contributors were nominally Labour Party members, contents of the magazine tended strongly towards a Socialistic, anti-war platform somewhat to the left of official Labour party positions (especially during WW2) and were intended to educate a working-class audience on the principal social and political movements of the period, from a left wing perspective. Regular contributors included James and Christine Millar, W.T. Colyer, Rennie Smith, J.F. Horrabin, etc.; all issues illustrated with cartoons by "Marchy," "Bok," "Jem", others. War-date issues are somewhat uncommon due to the paper's shrinking popularity as well as difficulties in production during wartime. Meaningful runs from this period are scarce; this grouping, though by no means consecutive, provides a coherent picture of moderate socialist attitudes towards the European War during its most brutal phase. Small quarto (digest format), ca 25cm x 19cm. Staple-bound, pictorial wrappers; each issue 24pp. Includes: (1940) nos 5, 9, 10, 12; (1941) nos 1, 3, 4, 7, 11; (1942) nos 3, 4, 6. Expected wear; all with at least a bit of tenderness at bound edge; three with wrappers detached (but present); all issues complete with text generally clean and fresh; about Very Good overall.
