With the South having far less capacity to produce arms than the North and with communications from the field severely hampered throughout the war, the former West Pointer nevertheless was responsible for the fact that, as some have argued, the South kept the war alive as long as it did.

Slight crease to the first two leaves, else a nice example. In a good dust jacket, with shallow chips and short tears to the top of the front panel and spine. Spine panel sunned. A marvelous association copy, SIGNED and warmly INSCRIBED by Vandiver to his "Aunt Fan"--that is, special collections librarian and scholar Fannie E. Ratchford--on the front free endpaper: "For Aunt Fan--who worked os hard to make this book make sense--and thanks for countless glasses of tea--Much love--Frank." In the Preface, Vandiver thanks her quite graciously in print, writing: "Miss Fannie E.
