Cracks to guttering throughout, with exposed netting. Heavy sunning to pastedowns and endpapers. Boards have moderate shelf wear, with rubbing and marking. Light bumping to corners and heavy crushing to spine ends. Book has noticeable forward lean. Boards are slightly bowed and tanned.

Elizabeth Barrett Browning (1806-1861) was an English poet. Her work was popular and successful during her lifetime, her best known works including poem 'How Do I Love Thee?' and 'Aurora Leigh'. She influenced American poets such as Emily Dickinson and Edgar Allan Poe.A later edition.Bound in contemporary leather with gilt detail to the spine.Presented to Ethel M. Solly as a reward for German, Christmas 1886. In a half calf binding. Externally a trifle worn, with rubbing along the joints and to the extremities. Boards have a little wear. Prize bookplate to the front pastedown. Internally, generally firmly bound, with some strain to the front hinge after the endpaper. Pages are a little spotted on occasion. Very Good

Covers bordered with three-line fillets and corner rosettes. Spines lettered in gilt. Covers lightly scuffed with mild corner and spine extremity wear. Spines are darkened as is the top 2" of front cover to Volume ll. Bound without half-titles and 8-page advertisement in Volume l. Book-plate of Major Bryan Palmes on front pastedown of both volumes. Palmes (1851-1930) was a member of an old English family who resided at Noburn Hall in York. He was a friend of James Conrad, retired from the Somerset Light Infantry in 1891 with rank of Major. These poems were written after the publication of "Seraphim" and with the exception of a few contributuons to English and American periodicals, are printed here for the first time.
