Boston: Houghton Mifflin & Co, 1886. Hardcover in pale green pictorial boards (dogwood flowers & decorative borders), stamped in black & gilt, all edges gilt. Good overall w owner stamp on fep (dated 4/26/1890), first signature (pp i-xiv) detached but binding is otherwise tight, light edgewear and soiling, spine faded. A deluxe edition of Longfellow*s poems with numerous b/w tissue-guarded plates incl frontispiece engraving of author, with orange border lines surrounding the text on every page. Overall, a sturdy and still readable copy, with handsome cover. Also laid-in is a yellowed 1918 newspaper clipping reporting poet Joyce Kilmer being killed in action.

6 x 8-3/4, 492 pp, index, b/w illus, black endpapers.

Synopsis

Henry Wadsworth Longfellow (1807 – 1882) was an American poet whose works include Paul Revere's Ride , The Song of Hiawatha , and Evangeline. Most of his works were lyrical poems which often utilized mythology and legend.
