Phillips, Samson and Company. Boston. 1857. . Full-Leather. 6 1/2" by 4". The covers are very sound and in good condition. Front signature was reglued in, and edges slightly trimmed. The first two free endpapers did not take regluing so both are not flush, with heavy breakage and chips missing at crease of paper on first endpaper. Second noted endpaper is actually the first frontis portrait of Goldsmith, with a second color frontis of a design of a harp. There is another front illustration after that, as shown in the pictures posted. Coat of arms bookplate of "Stearns Firm" on pastedown front endpaper. Otherwise, book is in good condition with some moderate age staining here and there throughout text. .

Blue wave-grain cloth over boards, blind stamped frame encloses mandorla centerpiece on each cover; gilt stamped floral frame and titles on spine; all edges gilt; full color initial title page with floral and lyre design ('Crosby and Nichols') precedes title page ('Crosby and Ainsworth'). Clean, scuffed covers and spine; front cover has horizontal scrape with some cloth torn; rubbed at spine ends, light fraying; tightly bound; bright, clean interior. Large 24mo, 530 pp.
