The Poetical Works of Sir Walter Scott, Bart. Vols I - XII by Sir Walter Scott - 1833

Edinburgh and London : Robert Cadell & Whittaker & Co, 1833 A complete set of the Robert Cadell edition of Scott's poetical works in 12 volumes with engraved frontispieces and titles from drawings by J M W Turner. This set is unusual in that the books have been bound in armorial soft pigskin leather bindings for Henry Arthur Johnstone. Each volume has gilt titles and emblems to spine and a coat of arms, emblems and date to the front board. Top page edges gilted. Internally the endpapers have been replaced in pigskin with a large boat design to the fep. Little is known of Henry Arthur Johnstone, but his library was dispersed and volumes appear occasionally. Two examples are in the Folger Library. The bindings have quite worn spines so the titles are difficult to read, and some darkening to the board edges. The odd volume has a nick from the side edge. The stitching style has meant that the half titles are separate from the pigskin fep and some are detaching. In one volume an early signature is also loose. Contents are complete and clean. The engraved titles tend to have some spotting, particularly to the top margin and there is general toning to page margins. Please enquire for a more detailed collation and additional images.
