Black and white engraved (mezzotint) frontispiece, decorative botanical borders throughout, all edges gilt, 320 pp, 6 x 4 1/4 inches, embossed cloth-covered boards with gilt decorative spine (hardbound). Cover moderately rubbed, 1864 owner inscription to front free endpaper, otherwise very good condition. Poetry by Joanna Baillie, Milton, Coleridge, Shelley, Bryant, Wordsworth, Shakespeare, Cowper, Drummond, etc. The frontispiece is a richly printed mezzotint engraved by Sartain of a mother and child. The poems by a variety of poets are divided into groupings: Admiration, Adoration, Content, Courage, Friendship, Gratitude, Honour, Liberty, Mercy, Patriotism and Superstition. The book sits snugly in the hand and was no doubt the source of quiet support and pleasure for its Victorian owner. A touching and thoughtful gift for the romantic in your life. .

Poetry collection arranged on various sentiments, described in the preface as the 'younger sisters of the Passions, differing from them only in intensity,' and exploring such themes as admiration, courage, friendship, and etc. Featuring the work of Shakespeare, Byron, Shelley, Poe, Coleridge, Dryden, Scott, and many others. Blue cloth with titling and decoration in black, brown, and gilt. Cloth very good with light shelf-wear and edgewear, gently age-soiled. Spine titled forward slightly. Binding sound. No jacket, if issued. Pages edged in gold, decorative floral endsheets, and produced with the text framed by drawings. Interior lightly toned, text unmarked.
