First printing, with imprint of Metcalf & Company on the copyright page [BAL 12078]. 779 pp, 9.5" x 6". Original gilt decorated cloth. Binding is in Good condition only, with fading, soiling and rubbing, especially to spine, and joints starting. Contents are Very Good, with minimal foxing and stains, some age toning. Extraordinarily scarce true first printing of Longefellow's hefty opus spanning several centuries of European poetry, with introductions and biographical notices by Longfellow, as well as a number of his original translations of foreign poems. Quite scarce. L-43n
