About This Item

Chicago: Edition Q, Inc, 1994. Hardcover. Near Fine/Near Fine. 8vo. Translated by David Floyd. Orange cloth boards with black lettering to spine and upper front board. x, 165 p.p. Slight bumping to spine ends and bowing to rear board. Dust jacket near fine overall, sunned to spine and bumped to spine ends. Drawing on recent Soviet history, author Aleksandr Shaginyan recreates three days in 1988 when the Azerbaijanis wreaked a savage attack on the Armenians of Sumgait. "Ethnic cleansing," that wicked contemporary euphemism, describes the heart of the policy that guided the Azerbaijanis' brutal ejections of Armenians first from Azerbaijan itself and then from the Armenian-populated enclave of Nagorno-Karabakh. This novel is the cry of a soul in torment, the attempt by one man to ease the pain and anger over crimes committed against the Armenians.
