A lovely first edition copy of this fascinating and copiously illustrated history of books about fruit from antiquity to the Industrial Revolution by H. Frederic Janson. The first part of this work explores the relationship between pomology and social history, divided into specific periods: antiquity and the Middle Ages, orchardist authors to Louis XIV, the Jeffersonian literary approach to fruit, the Enlightenment and Revolution, fruit books for the bourgeoises, and more. The second part of this work is an extensive bibliography, describing over six hundred fruit-related works. Complete with lovely original pictorial unclipped dustwrapper. With charming pictorial endpapers. Collated, complete with an eight pages of coloured plates, and one hundred and thirty nine black and white illustrations. Condition: In a cloth binding with original pictorial unclipped dustwrapper. Externally, lovely with only minor shelfwear to extremities. Dustwrapper excellent, with minor shelfwear to extremities. Wrap slightly marked to joint of rear flyleaf, with small closed tear to tail. The odd faint mark to verso of wrap, not visible to recto. Internally firmly bound. Pages very bright and clean throughout. Overall Condition: Fine in a Near Fine dustwrapper.
