London: Lovell Reeve, 1855 A very good copy of the extremely scarce 1st edition in the original decorative cloth binding with 20 hand coloured plates. This volume is part of Lovell Reeve's Popular Natural History series and is in their standard binding, which for this volume has a gilt cockatoo to the front board. The series was designed to give young people an accurate introduction to nature and encourage them to study further. The binding is very bright and clean. The spine is slightly cocked to the front and with light pulling to spine ends. Contents: half title; frontispiece; title; dedication; preface; plate list; text with 19 further plates and index 347 pp. There is some damage and old repair at the front endpaper joint with small loss to the front pastedown. There is the signature of Mary H Beale to the recto of the frontispiece. Contents are very clean with the odd mark, occasional light foxing and darker toning to page edges.
