Phoenix, AZ: N. Porter Company, 1939. 4to. 104 pp. 100s of text illusts, some photo illustrations, many printed in sepia. Green-printed softcovers, lozenge photo illust. on front cover of saddled horses, black lettering (minor shelfwear, creasing), still VG copy, w/ laid-in promotion and price-list for Karl’s Saddle & Silversmith Co. in Seattle, WA. First edition of this well-illustrated saddle and tack catalogue from one of the most important makers of western harness and saddlery in the world during the 1930s and 1940s. Founded in 1875 in West Texas, the company opened a shop in Phoenix, AZ around 1898, and even set up a shop for a time in the Washington Territory in 1888. The company became well known for their quality saddles and gun leather, and built and presented the trophy saddle to Lee Anderson in the late 1920s at the Tucson Rodeo which would serve as the predecessor to the modern roping saddle. This excellent catalogue illustrates the offerings of the famed firm of western gear and horse equipment to the ranching interests and working cowboys, and celebrities just prior to World War II. The catalogue includes Stock Saddles -- many of them elaborately tooled, some unadorned working saddles, Mexican Stock Saddles, youth saddles, saddle stirrups, tapaderos, saddle blankets, Porter chaps, Justin and Porter cowboy boots, Stetson hats, Levi’s blue jeans, Levi’s overalls, and Levi’s denim jackets, “Buscadero” belts and holsters, lariats, knives, sterling silver spurs, and more.
