The Portion of the Soul by Hooker, Herman - 1843

Philadelphia: Herman Hooker, 1843. Third Edition . Hardcover. Good. 24mo. 8, 127 pages. A small book measuring 4 7/8 inches tall by 3 inches wide. Hardcover bound in dark green publisher's cloth with cover designs embossed in blind. The binding is rubbed but sound. The gilt on the spine is fading a bit. Corners bumped. The inner hinges are secure, and the text block is sound. There are 19th century oval ink stamps on the endpapers reading "First Baptist Church - Danville, Illinois." An early owner's signature from somewhere in Illinois has been rubbed out on the front pastedown. There are pencil scribbles on the second and third front flyleaves as well as in the top margins of a couple of pages of text. The text is foxed. Herman Hooker (1804-1865) was born in Poultney, Vermont and was a minister and a bookseller. He graduate from Princeton Theological Seminary and was licensed as a Presbyterian minister, but later he joined the Protestant Episcopal Church. Partial loss of his eyesight and his voice led to his retirement from preaching, and he moved to Philadelphia where he became a bookseller. The first 8 pages of this book serve as an advertisement for his bookstore as well as a short publisher's catalogue of some of the books he offered.
