About This Item

Philadelphia: James P. Parke, 1808. Hardcover. Very Good. The Second American, from the Second London edition. Vol. 1 only, of 3 volumes. xxxii, 289 p.; 18 cm. Contemporary full calf with six spine compartments between gilt rules; red leather label in second compartment with gilt-tooled title. Two inscriptions on front free endpaper: "Thomas Jackson's Book"; "Presented to Eliza Hayhurst by her friend Anna Lewis June 18th 1836." The author, Thomas Clarkson (1760-1846), was an English abolitionist who had gotten to know many Quakers while working to abolish slavery in Britain. The Slave Trade Act, abolishing the British slave trade, was enacted the year before this edition of A Portraiture of Quakerism was published. In Very Good Condition: leather is rubbed; small scrapes on spine with loss from leather label; loss of quarter-sized circle of leather on back board; light foxing throughout; otherwise clean and tight.
