[Oakland: Black Panther Party, Ministry of Information, 1970]. Poster issued in advance of the plenary session of the People's Revolutionary Constitutional Convention (PRCC), held September 5-7, 1970. The Black Panther Party, along with a coalition of radical and New Left groups, planned for the weekend events to act as the first stage of the PRCC, to be held in Washington, D.C. in November. Held at Temple University in Philadelphia, the birthplace of the Constitution, "the plenary session was slated to be a huge event, a profound statement to the American people concerning the need to reconceive and rewrite the US Constitution in a manner that would speak directly and truly to creating a more humane and just society" (Dixon, Aaron Floyd. My People are Rising: Memoir of a Black Panther Party Captain, p.199). Somewhere between 6,000-15,000 individuals were in attendance, including representatives from the Yippie's, Black Power, Chicano, anti-war, women's and gay liberation movements. A powerful and visually striking poster, with bold text superimposed over the large centered photographic image of the double-lynching of Thomas Shipp and Abram Smith in Marion, Indiana (August 7, 1930). Rare, with no copies found in OCLC or in the auction record; we note a single example held in Oakland's African American Museum & Library. Original photographic poster, offset printed in black on beige pulp paper, measuring 57.5cm x 84cm (22.75" x 33"). Two old folds, mild toning to extremities, with two faint corner creases and two short, closed tears to right margin; unbacked; Near Fine / A.
