It includes eleven short stories: Bab'e carstvo (A Woman's Kingdom), Poprygun'ya (The Grasshopper), Chernyi monah (The Black Monk), V ssylke (In Exile), Skripka Rotshil'da (Rothschild's Fiddle), Volodya bol'shoy i Volodya malen'kiy (The Two Volodyas), Uchitel' slovesnosti (The Teacher of Literature), V usad'be (At a Country House), Otec (A Father), Student (The Student), Sosedi (Neighbours).
The publisher, Ivan Sytin (1851–1934), was an owner of the largest publishing house in pre-revolutionary Russia, who issued cheap editions for 'people's education'. Chekhov wrote, that 'this is a real people's business', where 'the Russian spirit smells and a peasant-buyer does not expel'. According to the publishing contract, Chekhov and Sytin planned to limited 10 000 copies of Tales and Stories.
