The Power to Love; a psychic and physiologic study of regeneration by Hirsch Edwin W - 1934

Offering: A remarkable specimen of the first edition in its unopened original state before being bound for the publisher for public sale. The folded pages haven't been slit and it has been preserved in its plain, sewn self-wrappers state. The pre-release, September 1934 presentation by Edwin W. Hirsch was for the literary editor, Llewellyn Jones. The illustrated work is culturally significant for its frank early discussion of male sexual inadequacy and impotence and its description of medical, surgical, and psychiatric treatments. Condition: Presentation: Excellent / Pages: Chiefly unopened, some fingering and bright and clean, except for insect spot on page vii of preliminaries / Wrappers: some soiling, top corner bumped. / Binding: solid and reliable, second and third gatherings with light gutter separation. Pagination: Complete with detailed contents, ten chapters with footnotes, (the parts with division sheets), and bibliography of sexology literature, pp. 353-363; illustrated with a suite of 5 b/w reproductions following page 24, including two microphotographs, one-showing an occlusion of a penile artery. Size: 227 x 148 mm (8.94 x 5.83 inches). Edwin Walter Hirsch: studied at the University of Chicago Medical School, receiving his degree in 1919. At time of writing, he was an Associate in Urology at the College of Medicine, University of Illinois. He went on to publish twelve additional book length works, of which, this one, his first, is his best known work. Llewellyn Jones [1884-1961]: published with Knopf in the 1920s and literary editor of the Chicago Evening Post (1914-1932); after, an editor with Willet, Clark & Co., Chicago; prominent in the Humanist Movement. He signed the 1933 Humanist Manifesto I. Llewellyn Jones moved to Massachusetts to become editor of the Christian Register (1937-1941). His papers are held at the Beinecke Library, Yale.
