About This Item
New Brunswick, NJ, U.S.A.: Rutgers University Press, 1983. Hard Cover. Near Fine/Very Good. This book provides a comprehensive overview of international relations and its paradigms and their failure to survive rigorous testing; building on the work of Thomas Kuhn the author provides an intellectual history of the international relations discipline since 1919 when the dominant approach was the idealist paradigm based on human reason and utopian analysis; the realist paradigm developed after the failure of international law and organization to prevent World War II and remains the dominant approach; he develops an original scheme for evaluating the adequacy of paradigms and reviews statistical findings to support the conclusion that the realist paradigm has serious deficiencies, especially in producing knowledge and explaining behavior; he provides a review of recent work on foreign policy and on the causes of war in order to delineate other flaws inherent in the power politics perspective (maroon cloth with white lettering has slight edgewear; dust jacket has slight edgewear and small repaired edge tear; otherwise a bright, clean, tight copy)
