About This Item

NY, Knopf, 1981.. Hardcover. Fine/Very Good. Royal octavo, hardcover, fine in VG white dj with a tiny tear at top. 306 deckled pp. Tuchman divides her book into three parts. First, "The Craft", in which she sets forth her view of the actual writing of history: the means, the techniques, and the opportunities of her metier. Second, "The Yield", in which she presents a wide range of subjects. Finally, the section "Learning from History". All but two of the essays in this book have been previously published. There is also a brief, charming essay on libraries and the "rare thrill in research, " and an exploration of the problems she encountered while writing her biography of Stillwell. A quote from this book: "But with all sorts of people being encouraged to ramble effortlessly and endlessly into a tape recorder, prodded daily by an acolyte of Oral History, some veins of gold and a vast mass of trivia are being preserved which would otherwise have gone to dust.
