Knopf in 1944. Depicts the lives of the eager young settlers on the vast prairie after the 1889 land rush opened Oklahoma Territory for white settlement. It traces the fate of that community through two world wars, a KKK uprising, an oil boom, and a bank failure, as well as more ordinary small-town events .
