Franklin Center, PA: The Franklin Library, 1989. Hardcover. Very Good/No Jacket. Signed. Signed by the author on bound-in signature page. full leather - green with gilt decorations and lettering; raised bands, all edges gilt; marbled endpapers, printed on archival paper, includes publisher card and letter laid in; there is a deep edge scuff/tear along the top fore-edge of the front board approximately 2.25" long. book is otherwise fine. Eleven-year-old Owen Meany, playing in a Little League baseball game in Gravesend, New Hampshire, hits a foul ball and kills his best friend's mother. Owen doesn't believe in accidents; he believes he is God's instrument. What happens to Owen after that 1953 foul is both extraordinary and terrifying. At moments a comic, self-deluded victim, but in the end the principal, tragic actor in a divine plan, Owen Meany is the most heartbreaking hero John Irving has yet created.

St. Ives: Being The Adventures of a French Prisoner in England (1897) is an unfinished novel by Robert Louis Stevenson. It was completed in 1898 by Arthur Quiller-Couch. Unable to write, Stevenson dictated thirty chapters of the novel to his stepdaughter as a diversion from his debilitating illness. He alternated dictating St. Ives and The Weir of Hermiston but gradually lost interest in the former. The plot concerns the adventures of the dashing Capitaine Jacques St. Ives, a Napoleonic soldier, after his capture by the British.
