Reading: George Getz, 1822. Small quarto. [Leaves 19.5 x 16 cm.] viii, 143, [1] pages. Original marbled waste paper-covered boards (employing discarded legal forms) with red leather spine and corners; spine title and fillets in gilt. Extremities worn, small chip to base of the spine, spine darkened from sun and soil, stains to boards. Hinges split and joints are cracked; binding is fragile but both boards are holding. Sporadic stains and moderate foxing; a few dark spots affecting the text with no loss of legibility; a few corners creased. Fair to good only. Provenance: Small printed nameplate of Jacob N. Hildebrand on the front pastedown. Hildebrand (1792-1868) represented York County in the Pennsylvania Constitutional Convention of 1838. Later penciled inscription of Andrew Myers indicating his purchase of this book in 1869. FIRST EDITION. In addition to publishing books in English and German, George Getz (1789-1853) was the proprietor of "The Berks and Schuylkill Journal." He also served as the mayor of Reading from 1849 to 1853. Original leather spine over marbled paper covered boards. Leather corners. Hardbound. Good. Autograph and stamped ownerships of Adam Guttinger (Lebanon, PA). Title continues: 'To Which Is Added A Plain, Practical System Of Conveyancing, Sufficiently Copious To Enable A Person Accurately To Draw Any Instrument Of Writing Appertaining To The Business Of A Conveyancer, Without Having Recourse To Any Other Work'. After service in the Navy, George Getz (1789-1853) became the proprietor of 'The Berks and Schuylkill Journal.' He later was a bookseller and publisher (in English & German).
