ont> S Lazari : Venetiis; Venice, 1837 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. A beautifully bound copy of Nerses IV the Gracious' daily prayer collection. Being twenty-four prayers in twenty-four languages from this Armenian Catholic divine. With a frontispiece of Nerses. Nerses IV the Gracious was the Catholicos of Armenia, or chief bishop and spiritual leader of the Armenian church from 1163 to 1173. The twenty four prayers to this volume have been widely translated worldwide. His 'Havatov Khosdovaneem' or 'I Confess with Faith' is the most translated. Several of his poems have been adopted for use in the Armenian Hymnal and Divine Liturgy. Nerses' writings earned him the appellation Shnorhali from his contemporaries due to the irenic quality of his writings. He is often referred to as the 'Fenelon of Armenia' as he made great effort to draw the Armenian church from isolation. He was recognised as a Saint by the Catholic Church and by the Armenian Apostolic Church. The Catholic Church hold his feast on August 13 whereas the Apostolic Church celebrate him in mid-October on the Saturday of the Fourth Week of the Holy Cross. With the bookplate of one 'Minshall' to the front pastedown. With translations in Armenian, Greek, Latin, Italian, French, German, English, Iberian, Persian, Arabic, Syriac and many more. With a list of translations to the rear. A nicely bound copy of this fascinating liturgical work by an important religious figure in Armenian history. Condition: In a full calf binding. Externally, very smart. Light rubbing to the extremities and joints. Spine has faded slightly. Bookplate to the front pastedown, 'Minshull'. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean. Overall Condition: Very Good Indeed.
