First UK edition, first printing. Boards and binding are as new. A very nice copy, with original dust jacket that is not price clipped and shows £9.95 net price. The UK edition apparently was printed in a limited run, in less numbers than the US version.

Includes a 30-page publisher's catalog (erratically paginated) at the rear. Hardcover bound in full leather. The binding shows some old wear and cover stains but is quite sound. Sturdy hinges. Early owner's light pencil inscription on the front flyleaf and a later doctor's inscription on the front pastedown. The text block is sound, and the text is foxed, sometimes quite heavily. Still, a sturdy copy of a scarce work and in the original binding. From a Mocksville (Davie County), North Carolina 19th century doctor's collection.

Bedford founded the University Medical College in which he established an obstetrical clinic for those too poor to afford a doctor, the first such clinic in the United States. Very Good; paper imperfections have caused foxing, detached. Stock#OB612 (iab).

1852 softcover pamphlet discussing the downside of tobacco. When I got this the cover was off. Volume has had some restoration: cover is backed with matching paper and is reattached. Paper and binding are fragile but overall readable with a gentle touch. Primary defect is the corner off the front page. Interior has foxing and stains but no vandalism. I think the author comes out of the same group that published Solomon Spittle (which I also have listed). 1852 is the first year this was published but this is titled "Fourth Thousand" so this is an early printing. Has 8 plates that are included in pagination. 179 pages, complete as issued. An uncommon item generally found in poor condition. This is decent not great (which sometimes is the best you can do). Topic is health problems of tobacco. Discusses addiction, acute toxicity, chronic health problems including heart and lung disease as well as problems of second hand smoke. Feel free to inquire.
