New York: Robert Carter and Brothers, 1858. Presentation binding of dark blue morocco grained cloth, beveled edges, the covers ornately blocked in gilt and blind, the back intricately gilt, all edges gilt, yellow end papers. The binding not signed, at rear paste down the small ticket of Leighton, Son & Hodge, bookbinders, of Shoe Lane, London, indicating almost certainly the work of John Leighton, the most prolific designer of the Victorian period. The 50 illustrations engraved by Dalziel Brothers, J.W. Whymper, & W.L. Thomas, and printed by R. & R. Clark, Edinburgh. (2), xxx, 9-188, 1 (advert) pp. Near Fine, recently expertly rebacked with original spine piece onlaid, corners refreshed. Presentation gift inscriptions front end page -"Jane G. Morgan from her Sister Lauretta. Dec. 25th, 1857. Given under peculiar circumstances to her friend Jennie W. Baird. Sunday, April 11, 1858". Laid in is a period gift envelope with one sheeted folded to make a 4 page note, addressed to Miss Jennie Baird - Present, dated Wednesday May 14th, and signed Sincerely, L. L. Watson. The letter explains the "peculiar circumstances" of the gift - Aunt Let (Lauretta) is on her deathbed and is gifting this lovely book and a bar of soap to her friend Jennie, whose gifts of flower bouquets have cheered her in her demise - "God's flowers Dear, dear Jennie; oh that the graces of the spirit may bloom in her heart." The final 2 end pages bear small pin holes from where the letter was pinned in at one time. A beautifully bound book with interesting period provenance, RARE in current commerce, last in at auction 1916 (RBH). . First American Edition. Morocco Grained Cloth . Near Fine. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.

Description:
Very Good 1714, Hamburg Germany. The first ever printing of this seminal classic. The first time that Bible stories were printed specifically for children. Thus it was somewhat "cleansed" before publication. One source I found says that the incest and murder committed by David were altered, among other things. It is four inches by seven inches, and includes 104 plates from engravings, 52 in the Old Testament, and 52 in the New Testament. There are 400 pages of text, plus the eight page introduction. Also, all the plates are on unnumbered pages, for a total of 512 printed pages. The book is in its original calves leather boards and spine, which are still attached but fragile. All pages, including all front and rear endpapers, are present. The last two plates have been repaired at the edges, and several pages inside have edge tears or stains, but they are minimal. There is the expected foxing throughout, and a former owner name and inscription in pencil at the front and a name alone in pencil at the… Read More

1736 BIBLE & BANNED Commentary Jansenism Catholic 8v Pasquier Quesnel French
Pasquier Quesnel was a 17th-century French Jansenist best-remembered for his commentary on the New Testament. This commentary was written to push Jansenist theology and doctrine which, unfortunately, seemed to form numerous phrases that were considered heretical by the Catholic Church. This French edition of the New Testament includes Quesnel's commentary, published in eight tomes.

"The Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin is the traditional name for the unfinished record of his own life written by Benjamin Franklin from 1771 to 1790; however, Franklin himself appears to have called the work his Memoirs. Although it had a tortuous publication history after Franklin's death, this work has become one of the most famous and influential examples of an autobiography ever written. Franklin's account of his life is divided into four parts, reflecting the different periods at which he wrote them.
