About This Item
(Cape Town: Juta & Company, 1972) 0702103683. 8vo; original pastel blue boards, lettered in gilt on spine; pictorial dustwrapper (housed in removable protector); endpaper map; pp. ix + (i) + 267, incl. index; plates and maps. Dustwrapper partially tanned, with small scuff to lower panel; a little foxing to top edge. Very good condition. "In this book, the first work to appear in English on President Brand, the author deals with the life of Johannes Hendricus Brand and the history of the Free State during his long period of office. He shows how Brand left the gracious life of the old Cape Colony to become the President of a poor, weak state in central South Africa. By his sagacity and leadership, he built up a Republic as well administered as any in the world. ... By his work in the fields of both internal and external affairs, he proved himself to be probably the wisest and ablest statesman South Africa ever produced. ... The author presents a picture of a fine man, a man deeply admired by his people." .
