Black and white in-text illustration on each page, unpaginated (approximately 32 pages), 6 1/4 x 4 1/4 inches, color pictorial paper covered boards (hardbound). Covers worn and soiled with paper loss to front corners and spine, covers loose and separated at spine, faint scattered soiling throughout, pencil inscription to front pastedown and rear endpaper. This charming and scarce early title features short single page stories such as: A Mermaid, The Idle Wasp, The Dodo, Marching to the Battle-Field, Jack Tar at Sea, Indians and Wigwams, The Cuttle-Fish, etc. This is one of a series of titles by Mrs. George Cupples, each "WITH A PICTURE ON EVERY PAGE"; the reverse of the title page lists 11 others including "Pretty Betty" and "Mary and her Doll." .

Pages and illustrations are moderately tanned throughout. Previous owner's inscription to front endpaper. Boards have mild edge wear with slight rubbing to surfaces. There is bumping to corners and crushing to spine ends. Book has a slight forward lean. Tanning to spine and edges. Gilt lettering is darkened slightly. Scuffs and scratches to boards, especially back.

Hardcover in the original Victoria-era orange publisher's cloth with cover designs embossed in black and with a small color pictorial image on the front cover. The spine is toned, and the binding is worn and has spotting and some light soiling. Inner front and rear hinges are cracked-cords show. There is an early bookseller's ink stamp and an owner's inscription on the front flyleaf. The ink-stamp reads, "Cleo J. Mowry - Geneva, Neb., [section of stamp too light to read] America's Greatest Family Newspaper" and "John A Dempster Dealer in Drugs, Stationery, Books & Jewelry, Geneva, Neb." The inscription on front flyleaf reads "Christmas 1880 From the Baptist S.S. To Eddie Dempster." Text has occasional smudging. Illustrated with small text drawings.
