With black and white illustrations throughout. A fine copy. First Brock edition. Charles Edmund Brock (1870-1938) was one of the most notable book illustrators of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. His illustrations for Austen's novels were partly based on the collection of Regency prints and costumes which he and his brothers had built, occasionally using family and friends as models. The present 1895 illustrated edition was in direct competition with Hugh Thomson's own 1895 edition of Pride and Prejudice, yet despite this rivalry both publications were highly successful, and remain widely regarded as classics in book illustration.
