THE COVERS ARE DETACHED, and the leather on the spine is gone. Contains a color title page and 12 color lithograph plates with highlights in gold. The plates are a little toned but are generally clean. The plates are facsimiles from illuminated manuscripts from the 9th to the 15th centuries. Scarce.

North Carolina: N.p. (Manuscript), 1889. First Edition First Printing . Hardcover. Fair. Folio. 27 pages, plus 6 other handwritten page and 3 typed pages laid in loosely and paper-clipped together. The binding measures about 15 1/2 inches tall by 11 inches wide. Bound in half leather with cloth-covered boards. The spine has completely disintegrated and the boards are just barely holding on. Corners rubbed and chipped. Paper label on the front cover has "Methodism in Beaufort" handwritten in ink. The original ledge was for the "Queen (Fire) Insurance Company of Liverpool, England" with the office in New York. Three leaves have been cut out at the front, but this may have been of different material. The first page reads, "Methodism in Beaufort..." and serves as a title page. Hardcover bound in original full black cloth with cover design and lettering in gilt and housed in the original publisher's slipcase with an orange printed label on the front panel. The slipcase is rubbed, scuffed and bumped. Scuffing and soiling to the paper label. The opening of the slipcase shows some abrasions and wear, but the edges of the slipcase are sound. The binding of the book shows some wear and has bumped corners and dulled spotting to the spine and hinges. A sound copy with secure inner hinges. Patterned endpapers. The text is clean. Stated First Edition on the copyright page. No dust jacket; our "Good" designation for the jacket pertains to the slipcase (worn but solid). Leighton's first and most desirable book. Signed copies are extremely difficult to find.

New York: Green & Spencer, 1851. Leather Bound. Very Good. 4to - over 9¾ - 12" tall. Quarto. [138], [6], iv pages. Bound in original full red leather with ornate cover designs embossed in gilt. The binding shows rubbing, bumping and wear but is quite sound. Rebacked in modern red leather with a largely plain spine bearing the title and a gilt roll at the headcap and foot and a small central device in the middle of the spine. Corners rebuilt with leather. All edges gilt. Modern faux marbled paper endpapers. Text is a bit toned, and there is foxing on the plates. Most, if not all, of the plates have their tissue guards. No volume number at the front of the book, but the general text ends on page 137 with "End of Vol. I" at the bottom of the page. An attractive, sturdy work.

New York: Munn & Co., 1859. First Edition First Printing . Hardcover. Very Good. Folio - over 12 - 15" tall. Folios. Variously paginated. The bindings measure 13 3/4 inches tall by 10 inches wide. Hardcovers bound in early black half leather with burgundy marbled paper-covered boards. Moderate wear to the bindings. Volume I has a tear at the foot of the spine and some wrinkles on the spine. Volume III has some heavy scuffing on the rear hinge and there is cracking on the rear hinge running about 7 inches up from the foot. The rest of the bindings have some bumping and scuffing but are generally quite sound and serviceable. The text is variously toned and has some occasional foxing. Hardcover bound in original full taupe publisher's cloth. The binding has been rebacked with the original spine laid down and with the corners reinforced. New endpapers. A sound copy; the binding is a little tight. Text is toned. Complete with the frontis portrait and a large folding color map. A piece of paper (the 20th century binder's notes) were taped onto the Dedication page resulting in browning on that page and the facing page. This shows up a bit on the title page as well.
