About This Item

The Museum of Modern Art, New York, 1984. Book. Good. Wrappers. 689 pages, divided between two paperback exhibition catalogues, bound with stiff illustrated paper covers. Texts in English. Lavishly illustrated. Lacks the plain cardboard slipcase issued at publication. Light vertical creasing to one of the volumes, with faint shelfwear to the edges consistent with age. Else, the bindings are both tight with clean and unmarked interior. Widely and soundly criticized at the time for its continuation of patronizing ideas about the value of first people's artworks being solely in how they were formally colonized by European artists in the early twentieth century. Even with our contemporary damning comments of that not so long ago time, these volumes document an exceptionally rich visual exhibition, that has great value for being the springboard for discussions that led the culture into a broader viewpoint that continues needing to be expanded..
