"In the military sphere, South Africa is probably unique in having been able to rely for more than a century on standing Volunteer units for active service not only in local emergency but also in the major operations of two World Wars. Prince Alfred's Guard has occupied an honoured place in the forefront of these units since its inception as the Port Elizabeth Rifle Corps on 19 September 1856, and can make the proud boast of having been among the first such Volunteer Corps ever to go into action against an enemy in battle, at Umzintzani on 2 December 1877. Since that memorable day, the regiment has seen much action and added great lustre to its reputation as an outstanding unit, of which Port Elizabeth can be justly proud. The history of the regiment and the development of Port Elizabeth have been inextricably linked for the last 111 years, and this chronicle of Prince Alfred's Guard embodies more than a little of the story of South Africa's 1820 Settler city." .
