(Mendelssohn I, p. 675; SABIB 2, p. 489) Boards somewhat rubbed, and backstrip fractured; earlier owner's crude tape reinforcing to upper hinge; some fox spots. Good. "The history of the corps for fifty years, from its formation in 1856 to the year 1906, together with a large number of interesting views and portraits having reference to the town of Port Elizabeth and the volunteer movement. Pp. 298-353 deal with the services of the force during the South African War, 1899-1902." - Mendelssohn. The history is of particular value in its coverage of the Frontier Wars. .

Full polished dark brown morocco leather with raised and gilt banding to spine and twin leather spine labels lettered in gilt. Speckled edges. In very good condition. Later leather fine binding. No inscriptions. Some slight darkening to main title page. Some foxing to folds on folding plates and adjacent pages. One other foxed area between p132-3. 421pp. Profusely illustrated with B&W photo plates, including 5 fold-out plates.
