Eastwood: G.R. Barber, n.d. (circa 1857). Tri-fold heavy stock, 8 3/4 x 5 1/2 inches. b/w

A battledore was an ephemeral educational aid, so called because it was similar in content to the hornbook, which resembled the racket used to play a badminton-like game called battledore. Got it? Google it. Anyway this one is of interest because of the illustrations on the outer (back) panels. They are: "A Chinese Junk of War," "Fort at Cawnpore," "Fort Cwalior," and "Destruction of the Chinese Fleet, June 1857." This last illustration refers to The Battle of Fatshan Creek, which took place during the Second Opium War between Great Britain and China, 1856-1860. On the verso are several alphabets and an "Evening Prayer." Some wear at folds, else very good condition.
