Octavo size, 411 pp. First U.S. Edition, actually published in December 1881, just after the London and Montreal editions. Mark Twain's first attempt at historical fiction, and which remains a favorite; it has been adapted numerous times into stage and screen productions. ___DESCRIPTION: Original dark green cloth with front and spine decorated in black and gilt, plain endpapers, frontispiece being an illustration of "the great seal", replete with black and white illustrations (per the title page, "with one hundred and ninety-two illustrations") inserted throughout the text; pagination: 411 pages include 7 pages of Notes at the end. ___CONDITION: Overall near fine, with a strong, square text block, solid hinges, straight corners with a minimum of rubbing, the interior is clean and bright, and it is entirely free of prior owner markings; the gilt on the front is still quite bright, with little to no rubbing on the front board. The head and tail of the spine do show some small tears, the corners are slightly rubbed, else fine. ___CITATION: McBride pp 70-72; Blanck 3402; BAL 3402. This copy has the text in the original uncorrected state (with "estate" on p. 124, "do not" on p. 263, and "reigned" on p. 362). (Also, the copyright page bears the primary Franklin Press imprint, but this is true of just about all copies.)
