London: Chatto & Windus, 1881. True first edition, preceding the 1882 U.S. edition. 32 pp of publisher's ads at rear dated November, 1881, as called for. Second state as usually seen with "fiend" p.8:15. 8vo red cloth stamped in gilt and black; illustrated tissue-guarded frontispiece; 190 illustrations in text. Good to very good with old repair to inner hinges, red at spine mellowed to tan, spine ends beginning to fray, spine gilt dulled but readable, small gouge in cloth at front spine gutter and a little fading to edges of front board. Despite its flaws a crisp, clean copy. Scarce in collectible condition.
Synopsis
The Prince and the Pauper is an English language novel by American author Mark Twain. It was first published in 1881 in Canada before its 1882 publication in the United States. The book represents Twain's first attempt at historical fiction. Set in 1547, the novel tells the story of two young boys who are identical in appearance: Tom Canty, a pauper who lives with his abusive father in Offal Court, London, and Edward VI of England, son of Henry VIII of England.
