ont> Strahan and Co : London, 1872 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. A lovely copy of this poem by Tennyson. 'The Princess' is a serio-comic blank verse narrative poem. The work tells the story of a heroic princess who forswears the world of men and founds a women-only university. At the time of the work's initial publication there was the founding of Queen's College, London, Britain's first college for women. The prologue and conclusion are set outside the poem at a Victorian era summer fete. The characters in the Prologue agree to participate in a story telling game about a heroic princess. Written in seven cantos. Alfred Tennyson was poet laureate for much of Queen Victoria's reign. He excelled at short lyrics and much of his work was inspired by mythology. Condition: In a full calf binding with gilt stamping to the spine and board edges. Spine has faded due to colour of calf. Patches of light rubbing to the joints and to the head and tail of spine. A few patches of rubbing to the front board. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are slightly age toned to edges. Spotting to the first and last few pages. Occasional spots to pages. Overall Condition: Very Good.
