London: John Murray, 1835. 4th Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. 20 x 11.5 cm. Octavo. Four volume original cloth bound set with paper end labels tan . Half titles present in volumes II, III, IV. All plates are present which include in Vol I: 2 plates plus frontispiece (406 pages), Vol II: 4 plates (465 pages + 6 pages ads), Vol III: 3 plates, one of which is hand colored (455 pages), Vol IV 6 plates, 2 of which are hand colored (456 pages). Browning to the end labels. Foxing, mostly to the first and last few pages of each volume. Foxing to the frontispiece as well as plate VI in volume 2. Some scratch marks to the paste-down inside front cover of each vollume. Some discoloration and rubbing to the boards. Bindings are tight. Charles Lyell was instrumental in the popularization the idea that the past is the key to the present when in the field of geology. Heavily influenced Charles Darwin's theory of natural selection, though Lyell did not believe in evolution until late in his life. Lyell's magnum opus went through 12 editions during his lifetime with each edition having new information added or corrected over previous editions.
