The Principles of Science: A Treatise on Logic and Scientific Method

William Jevons was the first economist to construct index numbers, and he had a tremendous influence on the development of empirical methods and the use of statistics and econometrics in the social sciences.

2 volumes; x + 463 pages with plate of author's logical machine on frontispiece; vii + 480 pages. Octavo bound in original red cloth boards with gilt lettering to spine; each volume enclosed in beige clamshell box with title and volume listed on spine. First edition.

W. Stanley Jevons was a leading political economist and logician of his time; his work in these fields led to the development of new perspectives on scientific study and economics, one of which became what is now known as bioeconomics. His contributions to The Coal Question (a study on the coal industry of Britain) in 1865 led to the establishment of the Jevons paradox and received widespread recognition. In The Principles of Science, Jevons uses a philosophical approach to scientific research and logic. It introduces ideas such as logic, reasoning, and experimentation, and is considered one of the first works to endorse the use of probability and other mathematical applications in the process of scientific inquiry. It is still widely regarded as one of Jevons' most important and useful works to date.

Description:
London : James Cundee, 1806 A good copy of this scarce 6 volume work bound in 3 volumes. With 58 (of 60) hand coloured plates and 6 hand coloured vignette title pages. An account of natural history based around observation and reading mixed with anecdotes and tales relating to the animal in question. The illustrator (anonymous) has then produced some extraordinary illustrations including an orang utan at the dining table, a flock of herons attacking rooks, a boxing kangaroo, and a man riding an ostrich, and a sneaking crocodile. Rev Smith refers to himself as an 'editor' rather than an author - but there are no clues as to contributors. Originally planned in 4 volumes, Vol 5 and 6 (covering fish, amphibians, insects and other invertebrates) were added in 1807. Each volume has a frontispiece, a hand coloured vignette title page, and a plain title page. According to the directions to the binder at the end of Vol 6, there should be 60 plates - this copy is lacking a frontispiece of a turkey and… Read More

New York: William Morrow and Company, inc., 1987. First Edition. Extensively illustrated with large and beautiful photographs. Square 4to, publisher’s original pictorial boards in the original decorated dustjacket. (30). A fine, bright copy. In clear, concise text and exceptional, full color photographs, noted science author Seymour Simon explains how different types of glaciers and icebergs are formed, how they move, and how they affect life on Earth. He also explores some of their mysteries: Can icebergs be used as a source of fresh water for dry lands? And will the ice ages return, covering the continents with glaciers as they did twenty thousand years ago?
