The Principles Underlying Typography by Johnck, John J - 1932

Seattle: Dogwood Press, 1932. Wraps. Near fine. Octavo size, 12 pp. John Julius Johnck was one of the partners of the highly regarded San Francisco publishing house of Johnck & [Harold] Seeger, who also studied with Daniel Berkeley Updike and William Addison Dwiggins at Harvard; this small pamphlet, printed by the Dogwood Press, is the result of Frank McCaffrey hearing Johnck read a paper at the 1931 Craftsmen's Conference in Seattle.

The Dogwood Press published its first work, "The Psychology of Printing Types", in 1934 and continued printing at least through 1960. Although information about the Press proves elusive, as recently as 2014 the Heavenly Monkey press mentioned the Dogwood Press in a blog entry; McCaffrey appears to have printed small, elegant books which were often about typography or Seattle area history.

___DESCRIPTION: Green paper wraps, gilt lettering and decoration on the front wrap, fore-edge uncut, title page with decorative border in black, red initial capital letter; octavo size (8.5" by 5.75"), pagination: [1-2] 3-12.

___CONDITION: Volume is near fine, with clean wraps, a strong, square text block, the interior is clean and bright, and entirely free of prior owner markings; light edge wear to the wraps, with a shallow crease to the bottom right corner of the front wrap, and some sunning to the edges and spine.
