Original brown grained cloth; gilt-embossed title and publisher's device to front board and spine; 144 pp. Boards lightly rubbed; trace of moisture to front pastedown; remnant of private library shelfmark to spine and occasional pencil marks throughout; good or better. First American Edition of this important post-revolutionary essay by Lenin, which attacks Kautsky and the Mensheviks for their reactionary views. Lenin particularly criticizes Kautsky's essay "The Dictatorship of the Proletariat," published in Vienna in 1918. Published in a print run of approximately 1000 copies and distributed by the Russian New York bookseller Max Maisel. According to some accounts, most of the print run was remaindered and ultimately sent to a paper mill in the 1950s. A variant in a blue cloth binding is also known.

First edition of this important post-revolutionary work by Lenin, which attacks Kautsky and the Mensheviks for their reactionary views. In particular, Lenin criticizes Kautsky's essay "The Dictatorship of the Proletariat," published in Vienna in 1918. From the collection of Sigizmund Natanovich Valk (1887-1975), the Vilnius-born Soviet historian and scholar of the Russian revolutionary movement. In 1918-1927, he served as the head of the Revolutionary History Archive in St. Petersburg and was one of the founders of Soviet historiography, publishing numerous key works throughout his life. The bulk of his collection is today housed at the Russian Academy of Sciences. This title not in the Souvarine and Bernshtein catalog (Dekker & Nordemann BV, 1980). Scarce in the trade.
