The Promenade at the Battery 1829

by VALENTINE, D. T. (David Thomas)

Condition: See description

New York: D.T. Valentine, 1919. unbound. View. Lithograph with hand coloring. Sheet measures 13" X 31". This charming view depicts the view from the promenade at the Battery in lower Manhattan, New York. The foreground features New Yorkers strolling on the promenade (now part of Battery Park) with ships sailing in the busy harbor. In the distance Castle Williams on Governor's Island can be seen with Staten Island in the background. Castle Garden (later know as Castle Clinton or Fort Clinton), which served over the years as exhibition hall, opera house, theater, New York City Aquarium and perhaps most famously as America's first immigration station (before Ellis Island) can be glimpsed. A quote from Philip Hone's diary under the title reads, "I walked with my wife for an hour before dinner at the Battery. What a beautiful spot it is! The grounds are in fine order. The noble bay with the opposite shores of Brooklyn and Staten Island: Vessels of every description, from the well-appointed Liverpool packets to the little market craft, give life and animation to a prospect unexcelled by any city in the world." This print was originally drawn on stone and lithographed by Thomas Thompson in 1829. From the collection of Mr. Simeon Ford and published for the 1919 edition of Valentine's Manual Vol. III, a a directory of extensive historical and contemporary records of New York. In good condition with minor wear along original fold lines. Repair to center.
