About This Item

Sydney: Charles Kay, 1856. Very good condition. Copper plate etching showing the Gothic cathedral in three quarter view, with flying buttresses and two towers. The cathedral, constructed between 1837 and 1868, is the oldest Gothic revival cathedral in Australia and has served as the state church for important events. St. Andrews is the cathedral church of the Anglican Diocese of Sydney, and was consecrated in 1868. It was designed by the architect Edmund Blacket who served as the official colonial architect from 1849 to 1854. Blacket designed universities, cathedrals, parish churches, banks, offices, bridges, mansions and private residences, and became known as the "Wren of Sydney". The cathedral was built of freestone in a warm brown color and boasts fine Gothic stained glass windows by local artists including Ashwin and Falconer and Norman Carter, well proportioned towers, buttressing and many pinnacles. On a loose sheet, wove paper. Paper size 13 1/2 x 9". Trove records the etching at the National Gallery of Australia at 2005.712 NGA IRN: 142164.
