The first book of Frank William Taussig (1859-1940), Harvard economist and major architect of modern international trade theory, originally written for competition in the 1882 Toppan Prize in Political Science at Harvard, which it won. In it, Taussig explores arguments for government protection of certain young industries, creating an “industrial history of the United States, and the course of protective legislation, from 1789 to 1838,” and specifically examining the histories of American cotton, woolen, and iron manufacture.
