Original photograph - Schalekamp, J.M. (1844-1912). Purmerend. Breedstraat. Amsterdam, J.M. Schalekamp, ca. 1890-1900. ca. 22.5 x 16.5 cm.

Very rare original photograph by Johan Marinus Schalekamp (1844-1912), one of a group of original photographs which were used to make a picture postcard. We have traced some of the executed picture postcards, greatly reduced images of our original photographs. Schalekamp was one of the largest (possibly even the first) publishers of Dutch topographical picture postcards around 1900. He was active in Haarlem (1870-1879); Amsterdam (1881-1893) and Buiksloot (near Amsterdam, 1893-1912). He had a photographic studio, a (photo)lithographic and book printing office from 1893 onwards. Not only did he print his own picture postcards and books, but he also worked for other publishers.

Very good copy. Provenance: Bought by a Dutch collector of photography in the 1960s, beginning of 1970s. Titled in pencil on verso. RKD; Wachlin 2011, Vol. 2, p. 517 (as: Schalenkamp, Johan Marinus).

Description:
Goupil, Paris, 1880; Woodburytype photograph by Ferdinand Mulnier of eminent sculptor Frederic Auguste Bartholdi (1834-1904), renowned for his design, in 1878, of the Statue of Liberty. Bartholdi was also an accomplished painter, who worked under the pseudonym "Amilcar Hasenfratz" when creating his popular paintings of Egyptian themes, fearing they might detract from his fame as a sculptor. Photo measures approximately 3 1/2" x 5", mounted on the first of twelve 11" x 14" leaves of biographical and critical text by Charles Lefevbre. Additionally laid in is a large 7 1/2" x 9 1/2" photo, mounted on 11" x 14" card, of the Bartholdi sculpture "Rouget de Lisle." All text in French. From the 19th century "Galerie Contemporaine" photographic collection of leading figures from the arts and sciences, published in Paris by Goupil and issued in parts from 1876 to 1884. Description:
Against a stark horizon in a harsh climate, settlers in Nebraska everywhere erected monuments to their optimism. The buildings pictured in Dreams in Dry Places are not just famous landmarks like the State Capitol but also humble farmhouses, barns, grain elevators, courthouses, banks, churches, stores, and theaters. They represent every kind of architecture to be found in Nebraska--folk, high-style, commercial, residential, pioneer, and modern; the unexpected and the familiar, the poetic and the prosaic, good and bad. Caught by Roger Bruhn's camera, these structures always suggest the spiritual resources of their builders and inhabitants, who struggled for a livelihood on the Great Plains.Dreams in Dry Places has an architecture of its own, beginning and ending with images of the natural landscape and in between revealing unexpected continuities among disparate structures and settings, juxtapositions of forms, and the vanities and vagaries of architectural style. Exterior and interior shots are… Read More
