London: Hookham New Bond Street , 1787. fFull leather.. Very Good. C.R.Ryley. 12 volumes bound in six. Each book starts with a copper engraving by C.R.Ryley, engraved by Skelton. Complete. Bound in period full leather with red labels, with plain end papers. Inscribed in ink by ‘Henry Monkton’. In excellent condition. Berquin (1747-1791) specialized in writing childhood literature, this was unusual in this period. His children's books enjoyed great popularity and were often reprinted throughout the nineteenth century in many languages. Percy Muir lists the first English translation ‘L’Ami des Enfants…’ (1782-3) being published in 1786 in 24 volumes. This was printed a year later. The British Library does have a later copy of this edition. Provenance : Property from the estate of the late Lady King of Wartnaby.
