(5 3/4 X 3 3/4 inches) 64-page booklet in original sewn yellow-tinted wrappers, with mining camp vignette on front cover showing a cabin near a river, and men working, and mining with a sluice box; separate advertisements inside front cover, inside back cover, and on back. Stone ("Old Put") collected, in this edition, the first appearance of the lyrics to "Sweet Betsy From Pike," and the lyrics to 31 other songs. At the back is a list of "Mining Localities Peculiar to California." Some of the unique names include "Gouge Eye," "Shinbone Peak," and "Rat Trap Slide."

(5) 59 + (6) pages printed in Japanese and English on hand made Japanese vellum, with 26 individual fabric samples (25 are tipped in, the 26th sample is the cover material for the hardcover binding), plus a wood block print illustrating a woman in Japanese wardrobe working at a hand loom. Number 180 of a limited edition of 200. Housed in an ink blue stiff folder with bone ties. At the bottom of each page is a description of the sample, its pattern, its weave, and its dye; in addition to a small woodblock illustration of the plant from which the fabric is derived. He opposed secession, and slavery; he eventually became Governor of Texas.His letter to Lincoln, dated July 28, 1863 shortly after Gettysburg, supports the Emancipation Proclamation. He proclaims slavery an enemy of the nation, and states that former slaves are " ... capable of being made allies in the common cause of freedom, justice, and humanity."

First Edition. 405 pages, "Roster and Record," index, original brown cloth binding with gold emblem on the front cover, and title in gilt on spine, both covers decorated with bands in blind, very good condition (mild shelf wear to edges, not affecting contents).

A chronicle of the IX Corps, written by seven different veterans. The name of a former owner is written in a neat hand on the front fly leaf: "Serg. John A. Fisher Northfield Mass." He is listed in the book on pages 171 and 369, as being wounded at Spottsylvania, before being discharched in 1864. Also, according to a separate note inserted in the book, Fisher's cousin was Joseph Austin Harris, listed on page 371; discharged in 1865.

A reflection of the relationships of two artists -- Grant Wood (1891-1942) and Marvin Cone (1891-1965) -- with the community of Cedar Rapids, Iowa. A loving biography by a woman who knew them both. Laid-in are two letters to the editor of the Cedar Rapids Gazette; one from Woods' sister, and another from a friend of Woods and the author.
