Original Binding Of Full Brown Calf With 5 Raised Bands To The Spine, With Gilt Titles On Red Morocco Label In The Second And Gilt Flowers And Scrolls In The Remaining Compartments, Marbled Paste-Downs And End-Papers. With Extra Engraved Title Page, Title Page Printed In Red And Black. Condition Good, The Original Calf Is Rubbed At The Extremities, Right Through At The Corners, Head And Tail Of Spine Chipped, Front Hinge Starting, Cords Show Slightly On Raised Bands, Ink Stain To Fore-Edge, Internally In Clean Condition, Pages Slightly Toned But Generally Clean Throughout, No Foxing, 2 Early Ms Signatures To Title Margins, One Crossed Out, Signature To Front Free End-Paper, Ms Notes Underlining And Crossings Out In The Second Volume, The Thomas Tretero Index. This Is The First Reprint Of Richard Bentley's Famous Amended Horace, This Is The First Printed In Amsterdam, The First Edition As Printed In Cambridge In 1711. This Edition Has Been Greatly Improved And Corrected, First Edition Of Bentley'S Virtuoso Edition Of Horace Was 'Unlike Any Edition Of A Latin Author Ever Before Given To The World' (Monk). Bentley Made Hundreds Of Conjectured Emendations To The Text, Many Rash And Unsupportable, But Equally Many Were Confirmed By Manuscript Evidence Later. Dibdin Ii:101-105, "Amsterdam Editions Of 1713 And 1728 Are Preferable To The Cambridge One Of 1711", Bentley's Horace As Widely Condemned, People Said He Had Taken Liberties With His Altering Of Horace's Original Text, And His Work Was Attacked In Many Pamphlets, In This Revised Edition Many Errors Were Corrected, Though Many Of His Amendments Were Later Supported By Ms Notes Bentley Found.
